First heard of Papergirl only last summer and the more I looked into it the more I knew I had to be part of it, so thought to set one up in our fine city of Norwich!

HELLO!

After over 2 years of thinking about making an Irish Papergirl, I have finally decided to make a move and bring Papergirl Dublin into the world.

So far, nothing is concrete. Hoping to have the exhibition and Aktion Day in June or July 2012.

There is a Tumblog, a Twitter and a Facebook page for Papergirl Dublin, if you want to follow any of them it would be great.

A submission address and deadline will be set in the next few weeks, so do check back.

Though, we launched a fisheye portrait series at the second edition of Workshop in the Garden, that took place on the 18th of June in Acaju Cafe. We will continue this story only if you promise to show up at our next session of workshops too! The more, the merrier!

It's Papergirl Cardiff Day!

It's here at last - today we are going out onto the streets of Cardiff to give away all the amazing free art sent to us! So a quick reminder - cyclists are leaving The Printhaus in Canton at 2pm to ride through Cardiff with rolls of art, and you could be the lucky recipient of an original piece of artwork. Don't forget to come out this afternoon and support Papergirl and join in the fun - you could end up with something beautiful to take home!

We'll be finishing near to Cardiff Castle around 3pm, and everyone is welcome to return with us to The Printhaus who are hosting the Artisan Beer Company's Micro Beer Festival today till 9pm.

Papergirl Iasi is back in business

I’m sure you’ve all heard papergirliasi.com doesn’t exist anymore. But don’t worry, nothing went to waste, it turned into papergirliasi.ro. Still raw, it will certainly receive its finishing touch before long.

On the 28th of May, we launched the workshop session in Acaju Cafe’s garden. We drew and made collages out of old magazines and craftily glued them with a slice of imagination. As for the paperboys, they came up with really nice pieces of art, while enjoying a cold beer.

The freshness was brought by Rozina Steigmann with her brand-new style Papergirl bracelet which we all loved.

Lots of workshops to come as soon as possible.

Everyone is invited!

Half-term Papergirl Print Workshop for Children!

Our friends at The Printhaus are going the extra mile in half-term week and are running two print-making workshops for children during the half-term holiday! It's the perfect chance for your children to make some art for Papergirl Cardiff, and a great opportunity to use the fantastic facilities at The Printhaus.

There will be two sessions on Thursday 2nd June: 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm. The cost per session will be only £6 for a parent and child - each additional child will cost £2. There are 8 child places per session, so please sign up now by emailing us: papergirlcardiff@gmail.com

This is a super half-term activity, so please do take advantage of this opportunity to check out our Papergirl partner, and get your kids into print-making!

Papergirl Cardiff Submissions Deadline Extended!

We are pleased to let you know that we are extending the Papergirl Cardiff submissions deadline by 1 week. Why? Well, a couple of reasons really. First of all, we realise it's a busy time of year and a lot of people are struggling to find time to get their submissions done. Second, the coming half-term and bank holiday might give people more time. And finally...we would love to get even more submissions! Our aim is for Papergirl Cardiff to be a fun event for as many people as possible so the more submissions we get the more surprised and happy people there will be!

So you now have until Saturday 4th of June to get your submissions in.

Don't forget, if you want to drop-off artwork on Saturdays you can now leave it at the Chapter Arts Centre box office.

Papergirl Cardiff will be the first Papergirl event here in Wales and one of many this year in the UK. Organised by members of social design collective ThinkArk and by social enterprise Cardiff Cycle Workshop, we hope to bring some art and fun to the streets of Cardiff!

We are pleased to be able to announce that will be holding our exhibition at The Printhaus, from 11th to 18th June. Location and contact details can be found here http://www.theprinthaus.org.

The Printhaus is a new printmaking workshop here in Cardiff, whose goal is to foster and develop printmaking as a vibrant and progressive artform. We are delighted to be able to join up with them and hold our exhibition in their fantastic space. It's going to be great!

After the Open Call for submissions for the first issue of Papergirl Hamburg ended on 15th October, we are now looking forward to our exhibition which will take place from 29.10.-13.11.2010 at the Kupferdiebe-Gallery in the Hamburger Gängeviertel.

We are very happy to present about 500 pieces of art from 60 art-givers from around the world at the first Papergirl exhibition in Hamburg and are already planning the bycicle-tour to spread out all the art to the lucky Hamburgians!

We have over 80 artists that sent us artworks for the last 6 months and we are now ready to show you the pieces.
We opened the exibition this last weekend, in Home Matasari which is an "open house" for cultural projects. We kindly thank Julian, our host, for that. We worked together into getting the house ready and fixed up 2 rooms and 2 hallways together with 2 basements of the house, wich we are very proud of.

We had stickers and t-shirts ready and some beautiful leaflets that had our friend Kina's work of art printed on an A3 spread sheet,
so that whoever came, got a piece of art of his/her own, by simply picking up a leaflets from the entrance.

I baked some muffins, Octavia and Andreea made some lemonade and we had a Jo.E, our friend from GrooveOn Radio selecting beautiful music.

Quite a few people came at the opening, artists and friends as well. We stayed late in the night, chatting in the courtyard of the house (it had been a constant over 35 degrees in Bucharest for about 2 weeks now) lying on the sofa and on beanbags, having a beer.

Special thanks to our friends Kina, Andi and Alex! We are all so grateful for everything! :D

I am currently in Berlin, and so excited for the opening on Sunday. There is so much wonderful art, and so many fabulous people! In a couple of weeks we'll be getting visitors from other cities (Bucharest, Manchester, Cape Town) with whom we'll be sharing ideas, experiences, and the joy of being a part of PaperGirl. Together we'll do bike workshops, presentations and the distribution!!

PaperGirl-Berlin is so wonderful to be a part of. I hope that my other PaperGirl, PaperGirl-NY, can be half as successful at it has been here. What's the trick? I dunno, but time, perseverance and a good team, I suppose. Perhaps a funny video too??

Of course, we will have a gallery show to exhibit all the work before it is rolled up and distributed, those dates shall follow once we know more about our venue, but we’re aiming for early September.

The Papergirl SF team made the collective decision to change the submission/delivery dates because a number of our founding members had time conflicts and would have been unable to participate or help with logistics otherwise. So now everyone has 2.5 extra months to send in some great stuff!

Papergirl is getting bigger and bigger in Romania. After Bucharest started spreading the word about it, 2 more cities, Iaşi and Braşov, said "We're in!". And now Sibiu is all good to go too!!!
So we are proud to announce that we're opened for everybody's art and joyful minds & hands to come and build this artsy and active feeling that Papergirl is all about.
We already have a few artworks in the collection, and also the department of "Don't know who's" art (not lost, but found) has some works in it.
There are 3 options for the exhibition, including the Museum of Contemporary Art from Sibiu, and we already have a big crowd for the distribution.
Besides all this, the project will hopefully develop bigger and better with workshops and collect boxes in different art camps. We will keep you posted with all the good news.

Inspired by all the great work and joy that you deliver, Bucharest decided to join the project.
Therefore you now have a ROMANIAN PAPERGIRL among you. :)

We have just finished working on the blog - where we decided to communicate in Romanian, but I will keep you all updated on how things will be rolling, by posting here.

In short, the project will start with the submission period (we will try to reunite in some art-making-play-shops every now and then - for a good creative atmosphere and a chance to meet more of the artists we have here in the city) followed by the exhibition, the delivery and a good party afterwards.

We are looking forward to some fresh ice-tea late summer evenings, with good music and home-made cookies, should any of you want to drop in and submit any hand-made rollable art piece. In perfect unison with Berlin (not intentional), PaperGirl-Albany has announced the 2010 schedule! What we have to announce is not only a deadline, but (drumroll, please)... this year Albany is joining forces with New York City!!!

NYC is a virgin to the PaperGirl scene, except for some artists who inhabit the city, and we're expecting a lot of success from what we are now calling PaperGirl-NY State!

Now, getting down to the dates of this year's event:

Charlotte is a rapidly growing city in North Carolina, we've got a lot of local artists here that come from many different backgrounds but due to the lack of unity between them the arts community is lacking a great deal. I know that there are many people here that are trying to improve that and this seems like a great way to unify the efforts in that.The hope is that this will not only help to unify the arts community here in charlotte but to also bring a little spirit of community to charlotte as a whole. this past weekend I was in charleston and Katy was down in florida and we started to spread the word outside of charlotte for donations. also a lot of the people on our facebook group are people who have moved from charlotte to go to school and we hope that they will help spread the word in their new communities, we'd love to see donations from all over. Everyone I' ve talked to about this idea has been very interested and willing to jump on board. As of right now we have made a blogspot site and a facebook group We have not set any final dates yet but we hope to have the showing in march, so that we have plenty of time to prepare and collect donations, after our planning meeting this weekend we will have a specific set of dates that we will use. we are also going to work on finding the right spot to have the show, but we've already got a few in mind. It is interesting to see how every city that takes on PaperGirl has a different result. Albany has less than 2 weeks until we exhibit our work.
I have a question about submissions: Not everyone gets the concept of PaperGirl. The idea that you are giving original, one of a kind pieces of art work to strangers on the street. I have received some submissions which, I find, are not in this criteria. However another concept of PaperGirl is that there is no turning away art. Correct? Perhaps I should be more articulate next year? I mean do digital photographs on regular printer paper meet the qualifications? But perhaps the people who recieve the art will be just as happy to get it.
This is probaly the only problem that I have come accross. It is a bit difficult to get the word out about PaperGirl in a short message, but the articles have helped a lot, and I also really think that Albany is a city that resists such a project. This is a city dominated by the government buildings, so it'll be intersting how this is received. The art scene is making it's way into the light, so it'll be excited to see what happens in the next weeks.

Paper Girl delivers a new brand of public art to Albany
By Josh Potter

Modesty comes quick to Sina Hickey, but when the artist and University at Albany student defers to the many people who make her current project, Paper Girl, possible, it’s not self-effacing—she literally wouldn’t be able to do it without them.

This spring, Hickey happened upon a Web site created by an artist in Berlin, Germany, that documented a project she’d undertaken for the past four years. In response to legislation that would have equated bill posting with spray painting, the artist devised a new method for creating and distributing public art. The idea was fourfold: First she’d solicit submissions of artwork from friends and begin accepting donated work from whoever wanted to take part. Having culled the desired amount of art, she’d display the work in a standard gallery show. Then, with the help of friends, she’d roll the work into portable scrolls that could be delivered via bicycle in the manner of a paper boy/girl. After the work had all been passed out at random, all over Berlin, she’d throw a party for everyone who had been on either the giving or receiving end. Playing with ideas of public art, gift economy, social networking and urban beautification, the original Paper Girl project adopted as its motto: “Anyone who picks up a roll is lucky, and money can’t buy luck. Something is most fun when you don’t expect anything in return.”

Since its inception, the project has been taken up all over the world in places like Portland, Ore., and Northampton, Mass., with plans for similar events in New York City and South Africa.

As soon as Hickey learned about the project, she knew she’d love to replicate it in Albany. All summer, she worked on the project’s first leg by collecting submitted work in a box she keeps in the trunk of her car. It’s meant a huge time commitment, all without the promise of monetary compensation.

“Paper Girl is about doing art for art’s sake,” she says. “It’s not about money, but it is about networking, making friends.” She says the project has been a great way to meet artists in the area and that the later stages can provide an opportunity for local artists to collaborate on something larger than their own personal work.

Through Sept. 28, Hickey will continue accepting submissions. Anyone who’s interested in donating work can drop it off at the UAG Gallery (247 Lark St., Albany) or at the Existing Artists table this weekend at LarkFest. So far, contributions have run the gamut from drawings to paintings, photographs, origami, seed bombs, and even a sheet upon which an artist printed photos of her home birth. The only requirement is that the work be handcrafted (no photocopies, etc.) and rollable.

Project collaborator Melanie O’Malley says that this, unfortunately, prevents her from submitting her (obviously unrollable) hand-built guitars, but it’s the project’s social component that most excites her. “The networking part is an art on its own,” she says. “Sina’s using a network to do Paper Girl, which itself creates an even broader network.”

Through this network, Hickey found Ken Jacobie, who was looking for artists to take part in a local show called Flux (Oct. 9-11), for which he secured access to the breathtaking 153-year-old St. Joseph’s Church in Arbor Hill. “The show’s about change,” Jacobie says, “and the project she’s working on caught my attention as something that imminently made sense.” Over the course of three days, Flux will display the work of a host of local artists, accompanied by music in the sonorous space. The proceeds from the show will benefit the Historic Albany Foundation; HAF owns the building and requires large sums for its upkeep. Before the work for Paper Girl is rolled and delivered, it will be strung and displayed underneath the grand columns and dazzling stained glass at St. Joseph’s.

“It’s such a pure idea,” says Jacobie of Paper Girl, “giving something beautiful to people who don’t expect it at all, for no reason other than happenstance. Person-to-person is the missing ingredient in our society today, and if the rest of the world could work this way it would be kinda cool.”

After the show, Hickey, O’Malley and others will roll the work and plan a set of days over which to distribute it. “We’re going to make sure to get every neighborhood, including the state Capitol on lunch break,” says Hickey. She says she hopes to enlist the help of the Troy Bike Rescue and has expanded the parameters of participation to include skateboards and other human-powered transportation.

Approaching strangers with a gift is a bold gesture, and Hickey realizes that some people might not appreciate the offering. “If somebody thinks it’s shit, they might turn the corner and throw it out, and that’s unfortunate. But we’re hoping that doesn’t happen, and I don’t think it will.” Inside the scroll will be information about the work included, as well as contact info and details regarding the open party to follow.

O’Malley is especially enthused about the project’s later stages and says she’ll definitely be one of the bikers. “It’s really exciting to see stuff like this going on in Albany,” she says. “I was born in Arbor Hill, and I’ve lived in the Center Square area since I graduated [from UAlbany], but it’s just in these past six months that the buzz [in the local art scene] has really picked up again. There’s just all these people, with really quality stuff, who want to get their stuff out there, and without all the pretentiousness.”

From the point of view of the Paper Girl project, art is only as good as it is significant and useful to the community in which it exists. The more people that get involved, the more useful it becomes. “Some people use the term ‘Smallbany’ in a negative way,” says O’Malley, “but it can simply mean living in a community,” which is what Flux and Paper Girl are all about.

Yay! Portland! I received 5 pieces of art from some of the Portland PaperGirl people! It is soo cool that this project is going all over the world! Yay!

PaperGirl-Albany has a new art deadline: September 28.

The exhibition will be at this wonderful Cathedral in Albany that is being renovated for a weekend show! St. Joseph's Cathedral is a grand structure that will be hosting the FLUX weekend of music and art experience! PaperGirl is going to have some kind of a wing in this Cathedral: October 9,10,11.

The distribution day is TBA. Hopefully the weather will stay decent!

The Albany group has decided to set our PaperGirl date back a month due to lack of submissions (although those that we received are Phenomenal), and to get into the optimal space! A wonderful church is being used as an artist/music space for one weekend in October (10-12). This space is amazing, and we tried to collaborate earlier, but I was hoping to do PG in September. Now, as a group, we have decided to use this space and to use the extra time to get some more work from people who were away for the summer (this is largely a college town, and so it will be packed in the next few weeks as the student body comes back from the summer).

I think this delay will be hugely successful for PG-Albany (I just hope the weather holds up!)

Northampton MA, is a small community in western Massachusetts centered around five schools, Hampshire College, Smith College, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke and U-Mass. While there is a variety of folks who live here, It seems mostly a community of young progressive students. And while the community here is filled with artists, receptive to public projects there seems a lack of communication between the participating parties. My comrades and I have decided to start a Northampton Chapter of the Papergirl project in a hopes to coalesce the various creative entities in this town and celebrate collective efforts to distribute art and ideas for free.
We have begun construction on a website for the project. Though it hasn't been completed yet, you can see the progress here. The deadline for work to be donated is by August 20th. The distribution and exhibition is scheduled to coincide with the monthly Northampton Arts Walk in September. We received a great response from local venues allowing us to hang the work! And we already are receiving donations! I am personally printing all of the fliers and flags for the bikes myself. Work being donated can be sent to:

Albany, NY is the capital of NY State (3 hours north of NY City along the Hudson River). There are many artists in this area, and not everyone has an outlet to get their art out there. This project, PaperGirl-Albany, has already proven to be a great networking tool for Albany. There has been one incredibly successful meeting, and anyone who hears of the project is supper excited that something like this is happening in Albany!

Art submissions are due August 10th-- giving us enough time to get our shit together for Troy Night Out and First Friday (Troy, NY is across the Hudson River, and we are hoping to reel them into this project too!). TNO and 1st Friday are held at the last Friday of each month and the first Friday of each month as a bring the neighborhood together theory. Art is often exhibited, and that is what we plan on doing!!

We are still looking for a space, but plenty of people have already shown their interest, and I think it is only a matter of time before we find a space! Flyers have been made and are in the process of being distributed. Contact sites have also been set up: Facebook group and Myspace.com/PaperGirl_Albany

One of the great things we hope to do in Albany is not only bring the artist community together (there are various cites around Albany: Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga, etc), but also unite the neighborhood within Albany, the lower class areas. These neighborhoods are so close to downtown, and not as scary as they seem. I'm sure we'll find artists in these areas who have no outlet to present their art, and I'm very excited to incorporate these neighborhoods in the final bike ride.
